First day of summer

Good news. With today being the first day of summer, that means only three months til the first day of fall.

Barb, the dogs and I took another five day jaunt to a possible chukar location. By the end of the trip, I decided that I wouldn’t add that area to my favorites. But we had a good time all the same. I did see a few birds, but there were just too many heavily used atv trails. I’m okay with multi use public land but that was a little too much for me.

What I did find was a lot of ticks. Usually, by this time, the number dwindle but the wet spring has helped them hang on a little longer. I haven’t found any baby chukars or huns yet nor have I seen any baby turkeys. I believe they are out there but with this grass as tall as it is, half of the time I can’t even see my dogs. Seeing some things moving through the grass but usually can’t confirm what is makin the grass move. On one occasion I caught up to the movement to be disappointed by a badger. Luckily, the dogs were off somewhere else.

I’ll be out in July checking the hatch but it looks like the only way I’m going to find them is if they are standing on the rocks or crossing the road. It’s that thick out there.

Meanwhile, keep your fingers crossed for what could be a very good year. And if someone would, please send me a comment. One of the readers mentioned it looked like the site wasn’t up and running. Just call me a name or say hi to let me know we are still communicating.

Enjoy your summer.

Hunting has been a favorite past time for me for 55 years but the last twenty five years I have been consumed by chukar hunting and more specifically chukar hunting with fantastic dogs. In this blog I hope to pass on any information I can about chukar hunting but more than anything I want to showcase what will probably be my last two chukar dogs, Jake and Grady. I am 70 years old, Jake is 8 and Grady is 3 and I'm hoping to stay on the chukar mountain until I am 80 when Grady will be fetching my final chukars.

  1. I watched the grass grow in some places near the creek to 6 FT. I’ve never seen Cheat grass this thick, also. Grasshoppers everywhere! I’m gonna get out near the 15th of July to scout to give time for a potential 2nd hatch if some of the 1st didn’t make it …might see a few of those bumblebees, too.
